What are EDT's
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course that teaches fundamental driving skills to learner car drivers. It is part of the RSA's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.
EDT is only part of the learning process, you will need lots of practice and may need more lessons to become a safe driver.
Studies show that young drivers and inexperienced drivers are more likely to die or be seriously injured in collisions, and EDT is one of several measures introduced by the RSA to help improve critical driving knowledge, skills and behaviours of new drivers.
If the issue date of your first B category (Car) learner permit is on or after 4 April 2011, in order to be able to sit your full driving test, you must first complete all EDT sessions.
If you are not required to complete EDT, you may still choose to take an EDT course, as it can help increase your chances of passing the driving test and will help make you a better safer driver.
EDT for learner drivers is a 12 hour course broken into 12 different one hour sessions. It is recommended that you allow two weeks between each session so that you can take any further driving lessons needed and do the required reading and necessary practice.
The 12 Sessions are titled:
- SESSION 1: CAR CONTROLS AND SAFETY CHECKS
- SESSION 2: CORRECT POSITIONING 1
- SESSION 3: CHANGING DIRECTION 1
- SESSION 4: PROGRESSION MANAGEMENT
- SESSION 5: CORRECT POSITIONING 2 (MORE COMPLEX SITUATIONS)
- SESSION 6: ANTICIPATION AND REACTION
- SESSION 7: SHARING THE ROAD
- SESSION 8: DRIVING SAFELY THROUGH TRAFFIC
- SESSION 9: CHANGING DIRECTION 2 (MORE COMPLEX SITUATIONS)
- SESSION 10: SPEED MANAGEMENT
- SESSION 11: DRIVING CALMLY
- SESSION 12: NIGHT DRIVING
Do I need a learners permit?
Yes you must hold a valid learners permit and bring it with you to every lesson or you will not be permitted to drive the car .
I'm very nervous about learning to drive . Is that an issue?
Absolutely not . Your highly experienced instructor will be very patient and proceed at a pace to match your confidence and ability. Everything is done in a very methodical and safe manner to allow the student to gradually develop their skills and confidence. The car is fitted with dual controls which means your instructor can safely stop the car at any time should the need arise .
What is your cancellation policy?
There is no charge for lessons or test car hire if they are cancelled 24 hours or more in advance. Lessons or test car hire cancelled less than 24 hours in advance will be charged for in full . If you fail to show up for your lesson you will also be charged for in full .
Will I have the same instructor for every lesson.
Yes , unlike the practice at some larger schools, you will have the same instructor and same car for every lesson . This means your instructor doesn't waste most of your lesson trying to figure out what level of driving you have reached
